Firewood log storage

Storage of firewood

by Carl Wilson on March 01, 2023

It sounds simple but “No matter how wood is sourced the manner with which it is stored will determine how well the wood will burn and how much heat it will generate.”

To store firewood correctly it needs to be:

Off the ground. – avoid allowing ground moisture to get into the logs (pallets are ideal)

Protected from precipitation and run off (roof or tarpaulin)

Allow it to breathe – You want the moisture to continue to come out of the wood and so it needs to allow air flow.

A good example I recently saw was logs stored in a wheely bin. – movable and waterproof but the water couldn’t escape so the logs couldn’t continue to season and ended up sweating making them very hard to light.

Make it big enough 1 cubic meter of wood needs 1.5m when it is split and stacked.

Preferably close to where you will want to access it and in a well-lit area. It will be dark most of the time when you need to access it.
